Why go organic?
Quite simply, because it’s better for you!
Our skin is the largest organ of our body, providing a protective covering that is living and breathing. Up to 60% of what we use on our skin is absorbed into our bloodstream and when these products contain synthetic ingredients and chemicals, this can cause a number of reactions to our skin, and the body within. Skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis can be irritated by these products, and they can cause the skin to break out into nasty rashes and pimples. Some chemicals used within many of today’s products can cause an imbalance within our hormonal system, causing a great many conditions and upsets. Not forgetting also, that whatever products we use on our skin, will ultimately get washed into our waterways, contaminating the delicate balance of our water.
Here is a list of the main ‘nasty’ ingredients that you should try to avoid when purchasing beauty products, and ones that you will not find in any of the products used by Organic Harmony using during their treatments:
Parabens (methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben also known as hydroxy methyl benzoates)
These are synthetic preservatives widely used in cosmetics. They are used to stop the product going off and to extend shelf life. They are toxic and can cause allergic reactions, skin rashes and have been linked to asthma and eczema. When we use these products, they are absorbed into our blood stream and can disrupt our hormonal system. Shockingly, autopsies performed on cancerous tumours have shown residues of methyl, ethyl and propyl parabens and reproductive abnormalities in young boys exposed to such chemicals either prior to puberty or as fetuses also may increase risk for undescended testicles, testicular cancer, sperm abnormalities and prostate disorders. The only way parabens can be introduced into our body is through the external use of skincare and cosmetics.
Sodium Lauryl / Laureth Sulphate – SLS and SLES
This is thickener and foaming agent and is commercially used to remove grease from car engines and garage forecourts. It is a very common, cheap detergent found in thousands of cosmetic products and a strong degreaser. It can cause irritation to the skin and hair, cracking of the epidermis and eye damage.
Tests show fetuses subjected to these substances sometimes do not develop functioning eyes, and can contract cataracts in adult life. In America, many toothpastes carry a warning label by law because they contain sodium laurel sulphate: 'WARNING keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. In case of accidental ingestion seek professional assistance or contact a poison control centre immediately’.
Lanolin
A fatty substance extracted from wool, which is frequently found in cosmetics and lotions. It is a common skin sensitiser that can cause allergic reactions, such as skin rashes. Lanolin tends to be contaminated with pesticides due to frequent sheep dipping to control parasites and disease. Diazanon, a neurotoxic organophosphate pesticide, was found in 21 of the 25 samples analysed where a total of 16 pesticides were found. It is advised not to be used by breastfeeding mothers due to high concentrations of residue found.
In surveys done by the Environmental Protection Agency, much of the commercial lanolin used in baby products was found to contain relatively high concentrations of pesticides such as DDT, lindane, and diazinon. According to the National Research Council, these chemicals are readily absorbed through the baby's skin. Each of them can damage the nervous system, and some of them are cancer-causing.
